Mountain life beats up your body. Walk out feeling better than you walked in — cold plunge, two saunas, and red light therapy under one roof.

API's Recovery Zone is a recovery center in Hailey, Idaho at 101 N Main St with cold plunge tubs, a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna, and red light therapy in one space. It's the most complete recovery setup in Hailey, open to members and to visitors on a day pass.

Cold water

Cold Plunge in Hailey, ID

A cold plunge is a tub of chilled water — usually somewhere in the 40s to low 50s Fahrenheit — that you sit in for a short, controlled amount of time. At API you'll find cold plunge tubs steps from the mat, so you can go straight from training into the water while your body is still warm.

Cold immersion is commonly used for post-training recovery: it feels intense for the first 30 seconds, then your breathing settles and the rest is calm. Most people start at 1–2 minutes and build to 3–5 minutes over a few weeks. Get out if you feel unwell, and check with your doctor first if you have cardiovascular conditions or are pregnant.

Gentle heat

Infrared Sauna

An infrared sauna uses infrared light to warm your body directly instead of heating the air around you. Air temperature stays much lower than a traditional sauna — often 120–150°F — but you still sweat, because the heat is going into you rather than into the room.

Infrared vs. traditional: a traditional sauna delivers hot, dry air at high temperature and hits hard and fast. An infrared sauna feels milder on your airways and is easier to sit in for longer sessions. Neither is "better" — many API members use infrared on easy days and traditional after hard training. Sessions are commonly used for post-training recovery and relaxation.

Classic heat

Traditional Sauna

A traditional sauna heats the room itself, usually to 165–190°F with low humidity. You feel the heat immediately on your skin, you sweat heavily within minutes, and sessions tend to run shorter than infrared — 10 to 20 minutes is typical, sometimes split into two rounds.

It's the classic post-training ritual: sit, sweat, breathe, let your shoulders drop. Members commonly use it after jiu-jitsu, boxing, or a heavy lifting day, and it pairs naturally with the cold plunge for contrast therapy. Hydrate before and after, and step out if you feel lightheaded.

Light

Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy uses panels that emit low-level red and near-infrared light onto your skin. There's no heat to speak of and nothing to do but stand or sit in front of the panel. A typical session runs 10–20 minutes, and many people use it a few times a week alongside training.

It's commonly used as part of a post-training recovery routine. We make no medical claims — if you're managing a specific condition, talk to your doctor about whether it fits your plan. At API it's included in the Recovery Zone right beside the saunas and cold plunge, so it's easy to stack onto whatever else you're doing.

Protocol

Contrast Therapy: How to Combine Sauna + Cold Plunge

  1. 1

    Warm up in the sauna

Start with 10–15 minutes in the traditional or infrared sauna until you're sweating freely.

  2. 2

    Move to the cold plunge

Get in slowly and stay 1–2 minutes to start. Keep your breathing slow and quiet.

  3. 3

    Rest and rewarm

Sit out for a few minutes and let your body come back to normal before the next round.

  1. 1

    Repeat two or three rounds

Most people do 2–3 hot/cold cycles. Stop earlier if you feel lightheaded or unwell.

  2. 2

    Finish however you like

Finish hot to relax and sleep better, or finish cold to feel alert and sharp.

Wood River Valley

Recovery for Mountain Athletes

You skied Baldy top to bottom until your quads quit. You ran the Hailey trails in the heat. You skinned up before sunrise for a backcountry lap and then went to work anyway. That's normal life here — and it's why recovery isn't a luxury in this valley.

Come in after a ski day, sit in the sauna, plunge, and go home loose instead of stiff. Visiting from Ketchum or Sun Valley? Grab a day pass on your way down Highway 75 and save your legs for tomorrow.
